Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccinations

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella are three contagious, airborne diseases which are all prevented by one vaccine called MMR.  While most people in the US are vaccinated during childhood, anyone who has not received the vaccine and is planning to travel is encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

What are Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?

These are three separate diseases with similar causes and symptoms. Measles often causes a rash and allergy-like symptoms. Mumps causes flu-like symptoms as well as swollen and tender glands. Rubella may cause a rash and fever, or it may not cause any symptoms at all.

How do people contract Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?

These diseases are all spread through coughing and sneezing. Measles is especially contagious, and the virus can also linger on surfaces or in the air for a few hours. Mumps can also be spread through sharing items like drinks.

Where are Measles, Mumps, and Rubella typically found?

While not common in the US, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella are found all throughout the world, as many countries do not regularly vaccinate for these diseases.

Is Measles, Mumps, and Rubella preventable?

Yes, all three are 100% preventable. People who receive two rounds of vaccinations will be immune to the diseases.

Why should I get a Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccination?

While typically not life-threatening in adults, the diseases can cause complications for certain individuals, especially those with compromised immune systems. If a pregnant woman contracts the Rubella virus, it can also cause birth defects for her baby. Since all three diseases are easily preventable, vaccination just makes sense.
